Hey BeYou friends, the April update has arrived! We’ve got new info for you about the metal structure used for the chair and a few other small improvements we never got a chance to tell you about in the previous updates. Because the BeYou chair is a rather complex product, we have many more things to tell you about it. Awesome, right?
There’s also been a week-long holiday in China that delayed a few parts of the process a bit. We have more details about this as well below.
Mechanism Variants & Base Mold
In the last update, we were telling you about the two different backrest mechanism options: the pin system and the ratchet system. Now we have some great news to share with you: the metal structure is 100% built for both variants, completely assembled, finalized, and fully painted. Isn’t that exciting?
As a reminder, the ratchet system is ingenious, but has more moving pieces. The pin version is simpler, and it’s a more robust solution.
The backrest height range is 10 cm, which gives you plenty of versatility to adjust the chair’s height as you need it or change it anytime.
We can’t wait to test them both and choose the best option once we receive them. The reason why we haven’t done that yet is because China celebrated Labor Day Holiday, which lasted from April 30th to May 4th. That means the two options haven’t been sent to us yet. The wooden parts and cushions also needed to be cut to the specific measurements of the BeYou and due to the national holiday, our manufacturer’s partners were experiencing some delays.
The cushions and wooden parts are set to arrive this week at the factory. The factory will complete the assembly of both chair versions within 1 day and ship it to our design & engineering team. Once the chairs reach us, we will make a decision about the backrest system.
After this, the only piece left to be finalized is the wheelbase mold. Besides our factory’s offer, our team had to invest time into getting multiple other options, so we can make sure to pick the most cost and time efficient options, at the best quality. Each mold can be used for a certain amount of units. To stay efficient, we needed to analyze the cost per number of uses and make sure we correctly estimate the amount of units we need now and in the immediate future.
After that, the official testing and certification stage starts! Woohoo!
New Improvements (already done)
We want you to enjoy your BeYou chair for a long period of time, which is why we’re investing so much time and effort into making this happen. However, because BeYou is such a complex product, there's many improvements we haven’t mentioned before.
The improvements are 100% completed already and included in the two chairs built by the factory. These have no impact on the estimated timeline.
Sturdier Metal
We’ve made the chair even studier by upgrading the sheet metal used for the entire structure to a thicker sheet metal. This makes BeYou super sturdy, durable and reliable to support you sitting in many positions for years to come.
Improved Seat Size/Depth
And if you thought we were done with the exciting news, just wait until you hear this one: we were able to improve even the seat depth. For you, that means you will have enough sitting space even when the backrest is completely upright, so you can use your BeYou chair to its full potential.
Because we’ve improved the seat depth, the size of the cushions and the wooden parts also had to be adapted and all of them had to be remade. Our main factory is working with different independent partners to make these parts. Because the quantity we needed now was a very small one, all of them were made by hand. This process takes considerably longer than if they were mass-produced.
This is part of the reason why the factory is still waiting for the wooden part and cushions. Because of this, we don’t have pictures to share this time. The inside mechanisms are visible in all the pictures and videos we’ve been receiving lately from the factory and for proprietary reasons we can’t share those publicly.
But that also means that in the next update you will see the BeYou Chair completely done and looking amazing, just like you’ll receive yours!
BeYou Rough Timeline Estimates*
* As always, these are still estimates, and every stage of the process is subject to a QC audit. If any other challenges or delays come up along the way, we will inform you so that you are always aware of the progress we are making behind the scenes.
** Golden Samples are exactly the same as the final product, in every single way. The Golden Samples set the standard for mass production and are used by the factory and Quality Control (QC) agency to compare with products taken randomly from the production line to make sure they’re 100% identical to the standard we (and you) expect from the BeYou chair.
*** We hear you. We feel you. Some of the delays have been difficult to deal with. This is why we increased the estimated timeline a bit, to account for anything unforeseen. We aim to surprise you, but for now this is the new official estimated timeline.
